We also invite the public to participate in a community open mic and encourage all writers, poets and spoken-word creatives to make their voices heard! Free draw
Feb

3:00 PM15:00

Free draw

Remember in elementary, middle, and high school art class when the teacher would announce free draw? The room would go wild and the classroom would roar? Well, it’s here. For you. As an adult. This Saturday at Yours Truly from 3-5pm. Drop-in anytime to this free draw workshop with yourself or a friend and bring your own materials or nothing at all. Stay for 15 minutes or the whole two hours, its 100% up to you. The Self Care Studio will have a variety of materials to choose from if you don’t have your own and a selection of drawing and journaling prompts to help you not *overthink* the process if you get stuck. Participate in the studio's ongoing project, The Self Love Trading Cards Club, if you wish, or choose from a selection of coloring sheets if a total free draw isn’t your thing and you want to draw between some lines.

I’ll have some music in the background and an aromatherapy room diffuser going to make the vibes extra cozy.

$3-5 suggested donation if you are able, no one turned away!

The Self Care Studio is a platform that illuminates the practice of self-care techniques through a variety of mediums. The studio’s online presence shares daily positive reminders in our social media-driven culture. By posting illustrations and texts the studio aims to promote self-kindness in times of healing, radical self-forgiveness, and prioritizing ourselves with mantras such as “self-care is not selfish.” The Self Care Studio also exists in the physical world as a pop-up shop. It sells self-care merchandise and facilitates workshops that provide a variety of hands-on sensory projects that encourage us to carve out time for ourselves by slowing down in the present moment. The Self Care Studio is a project of Milwaukee-based artist and author, Jenna Knapp.

Tell me all about your dream dresses
Jan

7:00 PM19:00

Tell me all about your dream dresses

Tell Me All About Your Dream Dresses, from Zelda Raygun

Clothing and fashion are forms of capitalist trauma but at the same time they serve as radical acts of healing and empowerment. Tell Me All About Your Dream Dresses is an experiment in using fashion as a radical act of healing. Clothing is a time capsule. The materials used, size of pockets, shapes of collars, size of sleeves all tell of the ways we live our lives.

These dream dresses are fragments of an idealized society. They are only half manifested because no one knows what it is like to exist in a society where there is no shame, fear, or guilt for truly expressing oneself through their appearance.

Can love occupy the same space as resistance?

1:30 PM13:30

Can love occupy the same space as resistance?

How does love hinder or catapult our most revolutionary and transformative desires for our communities? How do we respond to non-loving attack? What are the ways that we resist? What do we resist?

UWM Community Art senior, Nicole Naudi, in collaboration with Pink Salt Art Collective invites the public to take part in a series of writing workshops and group discussions dedicated to unpacking themes of love, activism and reverence.

Through guided poetry readings, writing activities and critical conversation, we will explore: how does love occupy the same space as resistance?

Participants will have the opportunity to submit any written work generated through the workshops to Pink Salt Art Collective's upcoming zine, Makewell Vol. 2. Makewell is a biannual publication showcasing text-based work of local and national writers and artists, existing both online and as a limited physical edition.

Each session will grow out of different activities and readings, so we encourage you to visit more than one! Come write, talk, and transform discourse into creative energy!

Was young: crayons in the ashtray

Was Young is a show with works by Haley Kreofsky, Kara Zielbelman, Jannet Habibovic, Walter Smits, and Maks Prykhodko that display childlike curiosity, spontaneity, and chaos filtered through the adult brain.

Calvin said I suppose it will all make sense when we grow up but, like, it doesn’t, so we make art.

There will be a lemonade stand during the reception, a mini skate park so folks can get rad, and lots of other toys and stuff to look at.

Curated by Walter Smits.

Con mi cepillo de pintura / With my paintbrush
Jul

6:00 PM18:00

Con mi cepillo de pintura / With my paintbrush

Paintings from Jordin Alanis + Emily Tripp

“Con mi cepillo de pintura” – Jordin creates paintings that begin as drawings inspired by past experiences, metaphors, or other human experiences and evolve into ambiguous, poetic paintings.

“With my paint brush“ – Emily creates paintings that operate in almost the exact opposite format, starting with representational imagery, cutting them up, creating gnarly collaged objects from the shreds, and then using the objects as a one to one reference for a painting.

“Con mi cepillo de pintura / With my paintbrush,” illustrates what it means for these two painters to create objects that utilize the action and result of painting a painting, to speak louder than words, or often less successful than words.
